What is this brown funk? (Answers: 4) (Comments: 0)
I have a 10 gallon aquarium, fresh water, do weekly 20% water changes with treated and aerated tap water. I have about 8 inches of fish (three 2 inchers and two 1 inchers), pH level hovers around 7.0, Ammonia and Phosphates are barely above 0. I have artificial plants, 7-8 hours of artificial light per day and clean the gravel weekly with a gravel vacuum. So, even with all of this I have a brown funk that clogs up my filter in about a week after I replace it with a new one. The filter is a white "hairy" sack with activated charcoal in it and I change it every week or so depending on how clean it is. I have 2 algae eaters in the tank and they tend to keep it clean although I have had to scrub a few times. So, this brown funk is more like a slime. When I wash my filter after replacing it, these tiny brown things (lumps?) come out and settle on the bottom of the sink. What the heck is it and how do I get rid of it? I am convinced it is NOT an algae as the algae eaters are pretty good at keeping it in check and I have used an algacide before with no change.
