Choosing your first aquarium

: Black Aquarium Stands Choosing your aquarium is could be the single largest expense of your new hobby so it obviously pays to get it right. Firstly, did you work out how big (or small) you need your aquarium to be? I know some people buy the aquarium first and then think about the fish but if the fish grow too big then you will need to upgrade to a larger aquarium and incur the additional costs.

Aquariums come in lots of different sizes usually measured firstly by how much water they hold, then by their physical size. My first aquarium was a hexagonal desk top tank which held approx 21 litres ( 5.5 US gallons). It was great for a few Mollies and a Betta, while my last tank was 5ft long, weighed a ton and carried approx 485 litres (125 US gallons). You need to know how big your fish will grow and also do you have room in your home for a tank of that size.

Larger aquariums usually come with a purpose built stand. You need to make sure the top this stand at least matches the footprint of the aquarium itself for maximum support and stability. If you are choosing to place your aquarium on a surface not specifically designed for it, like a table or sideboard, I strongly suggest a layer of either polystyrene or a foam aquarium mat to even out the pressure placed on the base sheet of glass. Avoid mishaps - it's easier in the long run.

Another major consideration when choosing your aquarium is whether it matches the decor of your home. There is no point having a work of art aquarium if it looks like an eyesore in your lounge. These days aquarium cabinets come in most shades of wood, from pine to oak and back to beech. They can be chrome, black, transparent or any other conceivable style. It's all a matter of your personal preference but consider several styles just to make sure.

Lids are a must. I know there has been a growing trend for these open top tanks with a light suspended from the ceiling. Some fish can jump and if they want to play while your back is turned - then tough. Dead fish on the floor while your dozing or worse still the family pet helps themselves and you are left wondering where it went. The other bonus to aquarium lids is that the majority come with light attachments so you don't have to worry about wiring one up to the ceiling.

One consideration, my wife pointed out when we were looking to upgrade one of our tanks was the colour of the sealant that holds the glass together. Some aquariums are made with a black sealant, although this is probably in older models, I personally prefer clear sealant which seems less obtrusive when viewing the fish. I know for a fact that now there are aquariums where the front and sides are made from one piece of curved glass. This does away with the sealant spoiling the view and generally makes any tank look much bigger and more impressive.
